Michigan Freedom Trail Chapter of Young Democrats

Michigan Freedom Trail Chapter of the Young Democrats serves several counties offering opportunities for young liberals to join together for support and political action. Rural students please join us. We are building a lower Michigan force of young people to be the voice of the Democrats in Michigan.

We are going to meet up and protest, meet up and march, meet up at events to draw more support. We are an action network - we aim to be a powerful arm of Democrats, but with young ideas.

Everyone age 16-35 is welcome to join.

More About Us

As young Democrats, we embrace the ideals of Michigan, the history of racial cooperation, the history of freedom, and the drive to take action for the greater good. We invite all our members to be proud of our local history. Together we can keep that spirit bright in our counties.

Michigan's Role in the Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was not a physical railroad. It was a network of people across racial identities who helped people fleeing enslavement. This network was called “underground” because it was top secret, and “railroad” because terms like “conductor” and “depot” were used as codes for helpers and safe places.

Many towns in Michigan were part of the Underground Railroad. There are endless accounts about our state’s importance to this secret network that aided thousands of people on their journey to freedom. Conductors hid freedom seekers in their homes and barns during the day. At night, freedom seekers would go to a depot in the next town. For many, Detroit was the last stop before making their way to a free life in Canada, but a number stayed in Michigan and started their new lives.

Michigan has 24 sites highlighting notable people and places that were part of the Underground Railroad story in Michigan. These sites bring a wealth of information to highlight not only the sites’ history and role in the Underground Railroad, but also the expression of civil rights.

Founded in 1932, the Young Democrats of America (YDA) is the largest youth-led, partisan political organization in the nation and serves as the national federation for all state and territorial Young Democrat chapters. As a completely volunteer-led organization, the Young Democrats of America mobilizes young people under the age of 36 to participate in the electoral process to elect Democrats, influence the ideals of the Democratic Party, advocate for progressive issues, and train the next generation of progressive leaders.

Our membership reflects the broad diversity of our nation and the Democratic Party. Participation in the Young Democrats of America allows members to network with their peers from across the nation and the opportunity to sharpen their political skills.

Be Bold, Be Heard, Be Seen

The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good men do nothing.
